One of our many longtime customers came to us with yet another challenge. This time an aging 35 ft. diameter x 80 ft. tall grain silo, integral to their operations, had extensive areas of corrosion in both the roof and upper shell. The time had come to address the issue.
The Silo Repair Challenge
Challenges included the location of the silo in a very congested area of the plant and the importance of minimizing down time; plus the explosive nature of the grain dust still remaining inside the silo. Approaching a project like this requires perfect teamwork and that’s how RECO works with our customers. Together, we agreed that this project would entail replacing the entire roof as well as the upper 20 ft. of shell.
The Silo Repair Technique
First, the new top section was constructed and fully assembled on the ground prior to the scheduled shutdown. Then, to safely remove the top portion of the silo and prevent any potential for igniting the dust, we used high pressure water cutting. The roof had to be rigged thru numerous water cut “choker” holes to allow safe removal of this very corroded and heavy section. Once open to atmosphere, the entire silo interior was washed down. Then, working around the clock, we hoisted the new section into position. It was a perfect fit.
The entire project was completed ahead of schedule and the shutdown was limited to five days.
At RECO we understand what this type of project means to our customers. We had many eyes watching this crucial project and we appreciate the many accolades we received for our quality, attention to detail and most importantly, our concern for safety.
The next time you are confronting a silo or tank project of any size, give us a call and we’ll make sure it’s a perfect fit.
